CHLORDIAZEPOXIDE; AMITRIPTYLINE (klor dye az e POX ide; a mee TRIP ti leen) treats depression and anxiety. It increases the amount of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, substances that help regulate mood. It also works by helping your nervous system calm down. It is a combination of a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) and a benzodiazepine.

    Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication can cause serious side effects, such as central nervous system (CNS) depression, and can increase the risk of falling. Call emergency services right away if you experience symptoms of CNS depression: slow or shallow breathing, shortness of breath, feeling faint, dizziness, confusion, trouble staying awake.
    Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid alcohol consumption while taking CNS depressants such as tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). TCAs may exaggerate the CNS depressant response to alcohol, leading to an increase in sedation or psychomotor impairment.
