DIHYDROERGOTAMINE (dye hye droe er GOT a meen) treats migraines and cluster headaches. It works by blocking pain signals and narrowing blood vessels in the brain. It belongs to a group of medications called ergot alkaloids. It is not used to prevent headaches or migraines.

    Notes for Consumers: Do not drink grapefruit juice or eat grapefruit while taking this medication. Grapefruit may alter the effects of your medication. Serious side effects may occur. Contact your care team right away if you experience new or worsening side effects.
    Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice during dihydroergotamine treatment due to the risk for increased dihydroergotamine exposure and adverse reactions. Dihydroergotamine is a CYP3A substrate and grapefruit juice is a CYP3A inhibitor.

    Notes for Consumers: Do not smoke or use tobacco products while taking this medication. Smoking while taking this medication increases the risk for serious side effects. Contact your care team if you experience new or worsening side effects.
    Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid smoking tobacco while taking ergot alkaloids. Concurrent use of vasoconstrictors, such as nicotine, with ergot alkaloids may result in enhanced vasoconstriction. Nicotine acts indirectly as a sympathomimetic agent by releasing catecholamines, potentially resulting in effects such as hypertension, coronary spasm, coronary ischemia, or cardiac arrhythmias, which may be additive with ergot alkaloids.
