TAMSULOSIN (tam SOO loe sin) treats the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia). It works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and bladder, which makes it easier to urinate. It belongs to a group of medications called alpha blockers.

    Interaction: Grapefruit juice
    Severity: Moderate
    Notes for Consumers: Grapefruit juice may increase the actions of Tamsulosin and potentially increase its side effects. If the blood pressure drops too low while taking tamsulosin, you may become dizzy or feel faint. To limit this interaction, do not stand or sit up too quickly. You should also limit or avoid grapefruit juice while taking Tamsulosin. Contact your prescriber if you have dizziness that does not go away.
    Notes for Professionals: Hepatic cytochrome P450 enzymes 2D6 and 3A4 are responsible for the extensive metabolism of tamsulosin. Although no clinical studies have been done, tamsulosin should be used with caution with inhibitors of CYP3A4 isoenzymes (e.g., grapefruit juice).
