BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE (ben zal KOE nee um klor ide) prevents skin infection. It is often used to clean and disinfect the skin after an injury or before a procedure. It works by killing or preventing the growth of bacteria on the skin. It belongs to a group of medications called antiseptics.

This medication is for external use only. Use it as directed on the label. Do not apply to burned or damaged skin. Do not use it more often than directed.
Wash your hands with soap and water after you apply or remove this medication.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. Special care may be needed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.
Do not take this medication with any of the following:
-Dofetilide
-Saquinavir
This medication may interact with the following:
-Acetaminophen
-Hydroxyurea
-Metoclopramide
-Nitrates, such as nitroglycerin
-Other local anesthetics, such as benzocaine, prilocaine, tetracaine
-Rasburicase
-Some antibiotics, such as dapsone, nitrofurantoin, aminosalicylic acid
-Some medications for cancer, such as cyclophosphamide, flutamide, ifosfamide
-Some medications for heart disease or irregular heartbeat
-Some medications for malaria, such as chloroquine, primaquine, quinine
-Some medications for seizures, such as phenobarbital, phenytoin, valproic acid
-Sulfasalazine

Visit your care team for regular checks on your progress. Tell your care team if your symptoms do not start to get better or if they get worse.
If you get this medication in your eyes, rinse them well with water. If irritation or redness gets worse, call your care team.
Heat can increase the amount of medication this product releases into your body. This can be dangerous. Avoid hot tubs, saunas, electric blankets, heated waterbeds, or tanning lamps. Do not use a hairdryer or heating pad on or near the area where the product is applied.
Use care to avoid injury while the area is numb, and you are not aware of pain.
Talk to your care team about this medication before having surgery, a procedure, or an imaging scan, such as a CT or MRI. You may need to take off the product before the test or procedure.
Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
-Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
-Headache, unusual weakness or fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, blue skin or lips, which may be signs of methemoglobinemia
-Heart rhythm changes—fast or irregular heartbeat, dizziness, feeling faint or lightheaded, chest pain, trouble breathing
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
-Change in skin color
-Irritation at application site
