    Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication increases the risk for dangerously high lactic acid levels. Call emergency services right away if you experience muscle pain or cramps, stomach pain, trouble breathing, or general discomfort and fatigue.
    Notes for Professionals: Patients taking metformin should be advised to avoid alcohol use. Blood lactate concentrations and the lactate to pyruvate ratio are increased during excessive (acute or chronic) intake of alcohol with metformin.
