• Interaction: Alcohol• Severity: Major• Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication increases the risk for serious side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, trouble sleeping, and vivid dreams or nightmares.• Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid alcohol while taking efavirenz. It is possible that CNS symptoms such as dizziness, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, difficulty concentrating and/or abnormal dreams may be more severe if efavirenz is taken with alcohol. -

• Interaction: Cannabis• Severity: Major• Notes for Consumers: Discuss cannabis use with your care team. The effects of cannabis may be altered if used with your medication. Call emergency services right away if you experience slow or shallow breathing, shortness of breath, feeling faint, dizziness, confusion, or trouble staying awake.• Notes for Professionals: Advise patients to avoid cannabis use during efavirenz treatment. Concomitant use may alter the exposure of some cannabinoids and increase the risk for adverse reactions. The cannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are CYP2C9 substrates and efavirenz is a moderate CYP2C9 inhibitor. -

• Interaction: Grapefruit juice• Severity: Moderate• Notes for Consumers: Side effects might get worse if you take this drug with grapefruit juice. Your prescriber may decide that taking these drugs together will benefit you. If you experience a worsening of side effects, contact your health care professional.• Notes for Professionals: Caution is advised when administering tenofovir, PMPA, a P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrate, concurrently with inhibitors of P-gp, such as grapefruit juice. Coadministration may result in increased absorption of tenofovir. Monitor for tenofovir-associated adverse reactions.
