CHLORAMPHENICOL (klo ram FEH nuh kal) treats infections caused by bacteria. It is often prescribed when other medications have not worked well enough or cannot be tolerated. It belongs to a group of medications called antibiotics. It will not treat colds, the flu, or infections caused by viruses.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.
This medication is injected into a vein. It is given by your care team in a hospital or clinic setting.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. While it may be given to children for selected conditions, precautions do apply.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.
Do not take this medication with any of the following:
-Finerenone
-Flibanserin
-Isavuconazonium
-Lonafarnib
-Naloxegol
-Pacritinib
-Some benzodiazepines, such as alprazolam or triazolam
-Some medications for heart conditions, such as eplerenone, ivabradine, ranolazine
-Some medications for prostate problems, such as alfuzosin
-Some medications for low sodium levels, such as conivaptan or tolvaptan
-Some medication for mental health conditions, such as gepirone or lurasidone
-Some medications for headache or migraine, such as dihydroergotamine, eletriptan, ergotamine, ubrogepant
-Suzetrigine
-Voclosporin
This medication may also interact with the following:
-Medications that lower your chance of fighting infection
This medication may affect how other medications work. Talk with your care team about all the medications you take. They may suggest changes to your treatment plan to lower the risk of side effects and to make sure your medications work as intended.

You may need blood work done while you are taking this medication.
This medication can cause serious side effects in newborns and infants. Talk to the care team right away if your child has a swollen stomach, vomiting, bluish-gray skin, trouble breathing, or unusual weakness.
Talk to your care team if you may be pregnant. Serious fetal side effects can occur if you take this medication during pregnancy.
Talk to your care team before breastfeeding. Changes to your treatment plan may be needed.
Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
-Allergic reactions or angioedema—skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, eyes, lips, tongue, arms, or legs, trouble swallowing or breathing
-Aplastic anemia—unusual weakness or fatigue, dizziness, headache, trouble breathing, increased bleeding or bruising
-Eye pain, change in vision, vision loss
-Infection—fever, chills, cough, or sore throat
-Pain, redness, or swelling with sores inside the mouth or throat
-Pain, tingling, or numbness in the hands or feet
-Red or dark brown urine
-Sudden or severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhea, fever, nausea, vomiting
-Unusual bruising or bleeding
-Unusual vaginal discharge, itching, or odor
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
-Confusion
-Diarrhea
-Headache
-Nausea
-Skin rash
-Vomiting
