MECASERMIN (ME ka SER min) treats reduced or slowed growth rate caused by low levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). It works by increasing levels of growth hormones in the body. This increases bone and muscle growth.
This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

This medication is injected under the skin. You will be taught how to prepare and give it. Take it as directed on the prescription label at the same time every day. The doses should be given about 20 minutes before or after a snack or a meal. Skip the dose if your child cannot or will not eat. It is important that your child eat well and not skip meals. It is important to follow the directions given to you by your care team.
Always check the appearance of your medication before using it. It should be clear and colorless like water. Do not use this medication if it is cloudy, thickened, colored, or has solid particles in it. Do not use any medication that has been frozen or has been open for more than 30 days.
It is important that you put your used needles and syringes in a special sharps container. Do not put them in a trash can. If you do not have a sharps container, call your pharmacist or care team to get one.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. While this medication may be prescribed for children as young as 2 years of age for selected conditions, precautions do apply.
Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

Visit your care team for regular checks on your progress.
Dangerously low blood sugar can occur when this medication is injected and no food is eaten within 20 minutes. Checking and recording your blood sugar is very important when you start this medication and whenever the dose is changed. Avoid participating in any high-risk activities like driving within 2 to 3 hours after a dose until a well-tolerated dose of this medication has been established.
Learn how to check your blood sugar. Learn the symptoms of low blood sugar and how to manage them. Always carry a quick-source of sugar with you in case you have symptoms of low blood sugar. Examples include orange juice, glucose gel, candy, or milk. Make sure others know that you can choke if you eat or drink when you develop serious symptoms of low blood sugar, such as seizures or unconsciousness. They must get medical help at once. If a child becomes unresponsive, you may need to administer an injection of glucagon. Make sure you understand how to do this before starting therapy with this medication.

It is important not to miss any doses. Call your care team about what to do if you miss a dose.

Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
-Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
-Bone or joint pain
-Increased pressure around the brain—severe headache, blurry vision, change in vision, nausea, vomiting
-Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)—tremors or shaking, anxiety, sweating, cold or clammy skin, confusion, dizziness, rapid heartbeat
-New or worsening ear pain, redness, irritation, or discharge
-Sleep apnea—loud snoring, gasping or choking during sleep, daytime sleepiness
-Trouble walking
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
-Dizziness
-Headache
-Lipodystrophy—hardening or scarring of tissue at injection site
-Pain, redness, irritation, or bruising at the injection site

Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
Store in the refrigerator. Do not freeze. Protect from light. Once opened, vials must be discarded after 30 days. Get rid of any unopened medication after the expiration date.
To get rid of medications that are no longer needed or have expired:
-Take the medication to a medication take-back program. Check with your pharmacy or law enforcement to find a location.
-If you cannot return the medication, ask your pharmacist or care team how to get rid of this medication safely.
