• Interaction: Alcohol• Severity: Severe• Notes for Consumers: Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication. Drinking alcohol while taking this medication may cause severe discomfort that may last for hours. Contact your care team right away if you experience facial flushing or redness, severe headache, stomach cramps, nausea, or vomiting.• Notes for Professionals: Nifurtimox is contraindicated in patients who consume alcohol during treatment. Concomitant use of nifurtimox with alcohol may increase the incidence and severity of undesirable effects (i.e., abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and flushing) similar to other nitrofurans and nitroheterocyclic compounds.
