It works by increasing the amount of protein your body makes, which increases body mass and muscle growth. It also increases bone mineral density. It belongs to a group of medications called steroids.

OXANDROLONE (ox AN droe lone) promotes weight gain in people who are underweight. It can also be used to treat bone pain caused by osteoporosis. It works by increasing the amount of protein your body makes, which increases body mass and muscle growth. It also increases bone mineral density. It belongs to a group of medications called steroids.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.
Take this medication by mouth with water. Take it as directed on the prescription label. Keep taking it unless your care team tells you to stop.
Talk to your care team about the use of this medication in children. While this medication may be prescribed to children for selected conditions, precautions do apply.
Patients over 65 years of age may have a stronger reaction and need a smaller dose.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.
NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.
-Certain medications that treat or prevent blood clots, such as warfarin
-Medications for diabetes
-Steroid medications, such as prednisone or cortisone

Visit your care team for regular checks on your progress. It may be some time before you see the benefit from this medication. You may need blood work while you are taking this medication.
This medication may change the blood sugar. Ask your care team if changes in diet or medications are needed if you have diabetes.
This medication is banned from use in athletes by most athletic organizations.
Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:
-Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
-Change in skin color
-Liver injury—right upper belly pain, loss of appetite, nausea, light-colored stool, dark yellow or brown urine, yellowing skin or eyes, unusual weakness or fatigue
-Prolonged or painful erection
-Swelling of the ankles, hands, or feet
-Unexpected hair growth on the face or body, deepening of the voice, acne, hair loss from the scalp, irregular menstrual cycles
-Thoughts of suicide or self-harm, worsening mood, feelings of depression
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):
-Acne
-Change in sex drive or performance
-Nausea
-Trouble sleeping
-Unexpected breast tissue growth

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Get rid of any unused medication after the expiration date.
It is important to get rid of the medication as soon as you no longer need it or it is expired. You can do this in two ways:
-Take the medication to a medication take-back program. Check with your pharmacy or law enforcement to find a location.
-If you cannot return the medication, check the label or package insert to see if the medication should be thrown out in the garbage or flushed down the toilet. If you are not sure, ask your care team. If it is safe to put it in the trash, take the medication out of the container. Mix the medication with cat litter, dirt, coffee grounds, or other unwanted substance. Seal the mixture in a bag or container. Put it in the trash.
