PRIMAQUINE (PRIM a kwin) prevents and treats malaria. It works by killing the parasite that causes malaria. It will not treat colds, the flu, or infections caused by bacteria or viruses.

PRIMAQUINE Lifestyle Interactions

  • Primaquine Phosphate 26.3mg, Oral tablet

    • Interaction: Food
    • Severity: Moderate
    • Notes for Consumers: Primaquine may be taken with most foods in order to limit GI side effects, like nausea. However, it is recommended that you do not significantly alter your intake of Grapefruit Juice, or avoid it altogether, when taking Primaquine. Grapefruit juice may increase blood levels of Primaquine by reducing Primaquine metabolism in the body. Too much Primaquine in the blood can lead to side effects such as dizziness, vomiting or low blood counts, which could lead to an increased risk of anemia or infection.
    • Notes for Professionals: Overall, the mean bioavailability of primaquine is increased by administration with food; the increase is not thought to be clinically harmful and may contribute to antimalarial efficacy. Administration with food is often recommended to limit GI intolerance.
